How can you expect your team to be well planned and organised if they see their Line Manager bouncing from crisis to crisis like a spider in a storm?
Line Managers need to demonstrate that they plan and focus their valuable time on key activities which will help their people to deliver individual and team performance goals. Exactly the same expectations as they have for their staff.
We have all heard the phrase Walk the Talk. This is a perfect opportunity to lead by example.
Take a little time to review your diary for the past 3 months. How much of your time has been spent undertaking PLANNED tasks to deliver YOUR business goals? Working with your people to improve their capabilities and abilities?
What proportion has been doing things which are NOT important to your business goals?
Internal meetings are the usual killer. Too many do not help you to deliver your targets and the opportunity cost of attending them is frequently greater than most people imagine.
So, perhaps we need to be more selective. If the choice is to improve your staff, or attend a meeting which does not help you to deliver your performance goals, what should your judgment be?
